Accessibility statement
Many of the families we serve include people with disabilities, so the site has to work for them before it works for anyone else.
The standard we aim for
Every page is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA, and level AAA wherever we can reach it. Accessibility was part of how Hometown's design system was drawn rather than a check at the end: the brand's two colors, pine and cream, have a contrast ratio of 9.89 to 1 in both directions, which passes AAA, and they differ in lightness rather than hue, so they stay distinct for every type of color vision.
What the site does today
- Every page works with a keyboard alone, shows a clear outline around whatever has focus, and starts with a “Skip to content” link.
- Paragraph text is at least 16 pixels, and buttons are at least 44 pixels tall, so they are easy to read and to tap.
- The waitlist form labels every field, explains a problem next to the field it belongs to, moves the cursor to the first problem, and has no time limit.
- Photographs carry descriptions in English and Spanish for screen reader users, and each page tells screen readers which language it is written in.
- Animation is turned off when your device asks for reduced motion.
- Photos are compressed and served in modern formats, so pages load on slow mobile connections.
- The whole site is available in English and in Spanish.
