FAQs

Fair questions, straight answers.

Is this really legal? It sounds too good.

Yes. Consumer Directed Services is a standard option in Texas Medicaid programs, run by Texas HHSC. Families have used it for over two decades.

Can I get paid to care for my own parent or child?

In many programs, yes — family members can be hired as paid attendants. Rules vary by program (spouses and parents of minor children face extra limits), and we'll help you check yours.

How much does Hometown cost?

Nothing. Texas Medicaid pays every FMSA directly. Your family never gets a bill, and nothing is taken out of the attendant's wages beyond normal taxes.

How much do attendants get paid?

The family sets the wage within the program's budget for the approved hours. We'll show you exactly what the budget allows before anyone commits.

Who is the actual employer — me or Hometown?

The family (or the person receiving care) is the employer and stays in charge of hiring, schedules, and supervision. Hometown is the fiscal agent handling payroll, taxes, and state paperwork.

What if we don't have Medicaid yet?

You'd start by applying for a Texas Medicaid waiver program through HHSC. Some have waitlists, so it pays to start early — join our waitlist and we'll point you in the right direction.

We already have an FMSA. Can we switch to Hometown?

Yes, switching fiscal agents is allowed. Your services and attendants continue — only the paperwork partner changes. We handle the transfer.

When does Hometown open?

Soon — we're completing licensing now. Waitlist members hear first and get help preparing their enrollment packet so day one is fast.
